Volcanic Ashfall from Kanlaon Prompts Evacuations

Volcanic activity intensified at Kanlaon Volcano on May 14th, following a powerful five-minute eruption in the early hours of the previous morning. The eruption generated an ash plume that affected nearby areas including Bago, La Castellana, and La Carlota, with reports of sulfurous fumes, falling debris, and scorched vegetation near the summit. Authorities have raised the alert to PHILVOLCS Alert Level 3, indicating the potential for further explosive activity.

A 6 km (4-mile) exclusion zone has been enforced around the crater. With more than 1,700 individuals currently taking shelter in evacuation centers. While some flights were temporarily canceled, major transportation disruptions are currently minimal. Residents and travelers are urged to stay alert and prepare as conditions continue to evolve.
