Tropical Storm Podul is moving across the Philippine Sea and is forecast to become a typhoon before striking Taiwan on Aug. 13th, then continue toward Fujian Province, China on Aug. 14th. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, and storm surge are possible, particularly in Taiwan’s coastal regions. In Okinawa’s Sakishima Islands, Japan, forecasters warn of dangerous seas, wind gusts up to 126 kph, and heavy rain. Travelers should prepare for potential flight cancellations, ferry suspensions, and other transport delays in affected areas.
Separately, Japan is experiencing severe flooding and landslides due to a stalled weather front, especially in northern Kyushu. Black emergency warnings remain in place for parts of Kumamoto Prefecture, while purple alerts for heavy rain and landslides are active in several other prefectures. Over 2.5 million residents have been impacted by evacuation orders. Rail lines, highways, and airports are expected to experience additional delays or closures.
