Newark Airport Operations Strained Amid Ongoing Delays

Since April 28th, flights into and out of Newark Liberty International Airport continue to be heavily delayed or canceled due to ongoing construction and staffing shortages. Over 400 delays and 130 cancellations were reported Sunday night, with the average delay surpassing two hours. The issue has been growing for over a week, straining airline schedules and frustrating travelers.

United Airlines has proactively canceled 35 daily flights from its schedule to help stabilize operations and reduce strain on the system. Reports indicate more than 20% of Newark’s air traffic controllers are not currently on duty, leading to increased demands on the remaining workforce. FAA officials and air traffic control personnel have highlighted challenges such as aging radar systems and staffing levels that may not be fully adequate to handle the current volume of air traffic at the airport.
