Monsoon Season Causes Widespread Damage

On May 29th, the town of Mokwa in Nigeria was devastated by torrential rains that resulted in a dam collapse, releasing floodwaters that swept through homes and vital infrastructure. Authorities have confirmed at least 200 fatalities from this event, with many more injured or missing. The flooding has displaced families, destroyed homes, and severely disrupted travel routes in the region.

This incident highlights the dangers that come with early monsoon season, which spans from late May through September in many parts of the world. Countries across Africa, Asia, Australia, and the Americas are likely to experience heavier-than-usual rains, and flash floods that may result in additional travel challenges and delays. With the start of the season underway, travelers and residents in monsoon-prone areas are urged to stay informed, prepare for sudden disruptions, and take appropriate precautions when navigating affected regions.
