Hurricane Erin Disrupts Travel Across the Caribbean

Hurricane Erin continues tracking northwest through the Sargasso Sea, bringing severe weather to the Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas on August 18th. Authorities have issued tropical storm warnings for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeast Bahamas, with watches in place for the central Bahamas. Coastal flooding, heavy rain, and strong winds are ongoing, prompting shelter preparations in the Bahamas and evacuations in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. In Puerto Rico, the storm has already caused widespread power outages that are disrupting local businesses, transport, and airport operations. Flights across the Caribbean are experiencing delays and cancellations, with additional impacts expected at U.S. East Coast and Bermuda airports later this week.

Travelers should expect ongoing disruptions to air, sea, and ground transport in areas under warnings and watches. Strong swells will create hazardous beach and marine conditions across the Caribbean, U.S. East Coast, Bermuda, and Atlantic Canada, likely impacting ferry schedules and cruise itineraries in the days ahead.
