A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Davao Oriental, Philippines early Friday morning, shaking large parts of Mindanao and prompting widespread evacuations. The tremor, which occurred at a depth of about 60 kilometers, caused power outages and structural damage in several towns. At least two fatalities and multiple injuries have been reported as authorities continue rescue and assessment efforts.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) initially issued, and later lifted, a tsunami warning, though residents along coastal areas remain on alert for aftershocks. Local governments have activated emergency operations, and response teams are coordinating relief efforts in affected communities. Officials urge the public to remain cautious as aftershocks are expected to continue over the coming days.
