Canadian Wildfire Smoke Migrates Over States

As of May 2nd, wildfires sweeping across Canada have prompted the evacuation of over 25,000 residents in Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. With dozens of fires still burning, thick smoke is spreading across much of Canada and drifting into the United States. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued “unhealthy” air quality alerts in several states, as changing weather patterns are expected to carry the smoke even farther south.

Health officials caution that conditions may change quickly and could be dangerous for children, seniors, and anyone with breathing difficulties. Similar circumstances were last seen in 2023, when widespread Canadian wildfires led to significant travel disruptions across the U.S., including flight delays and cancellations due to dense smoke and reduced visibility. With Canada facing ongoing extreme fire activity this year, people in affected areas are encouraged to stay informed through local air quality alerts and reduce time outdoors when possible. Travelers should also be aware of potential delays as shifting smoke patterns may impact flights and make outdoor environments hazardous.
