Severe Typhoon Jangmi is moving northward near Okinawa and Amami and is expected to track toward Kyushu and other areas of western and eastern Japan. Strong winds, heavy rainfall, rough seas, and localized flooding are affecting portions of southern Japan, with authorities warning of possible landslides and hazardous travel conditions. Wind gusts exceeding 100 mph and rainfall totals of up to 12 inches have been forecast in some areas.

More than 600 flights to and from Okinawa have been canceled, with additional delays and cancellations possible at airports across southern and central Japan. Rail operators have warned of potential service interruptions on portions of the Tokaido Shinkansen and other regional rail networks through July 16th. Road travel may also be affected by flooding, debris, reduced visibility, and localized closures, particularly in Okinawa, Amami, Kyushu, and along Japan’s Pacific coast.
