Severe flooding and mudslides continue to disrupt travel across northern Nepal and southwestern Tibet following the August 26 glacier collapse and resulting debris flow. The disaster has caused significant damage to roads, bridges, and border infrastructure. The Gyirong-Rasuwagadhi border crossing remains closed and access to Gyirong Port is restricted. In Nepal, portions of the Prithvi Highway and Pasang Lhamu Highway remain impassable, while damaged roads have diverted traffic onto narrow alternative routes, causing lengthy delays and congestion. Additional rainfall could trigger further flooding, landslides, and damage to roads and infrastructure across affected areas.
Nonessential travel to severely affected areas along the Nepal-China border should be deferred until conditions stabilize, including Gyirong County and Gyirong Port on the China side and the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha in Nepal. Travelers in the region should coordinate with tour operators and local authorities to identify alternative routes and confirm road conditions before departure. Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) and other major airports in Nepal remain operational, providing potential alternatives to disrupted overland routes, although flight schedules may change with little notice. Travelers should avoid flooded roads, damaged bridges, unstable slopes and active rescue areas and should not attempt to bypass border or road closures.
