Tropical Storm Lala is moving west toward the Hawaiian Islands and is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane before approaching the Big Island on August 15. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Hawaii County, while Maui County is under a Tropical Storm Warning and Oahu and Kauai counties are under Tropical Storm Watches. The storm is expected to bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, dangerous surf and storm surge, with rainfall potentially reaching 8 to 12 inches across Maui and the Big Island. These conditions could trigger flash flooding, mudslides and localized road closures, particularly in areas of steep terrain.
Travelers should expect potential disruptions across the Hawaiian Islands as Lala approaches. Flight delays and cancellations are possible at regional airports, while temporary port closures and interruptions to ground transportation may occur due to hazardous weather, flooding or debris. On the Big Island, Hele-On fixed-route bus and paratransit services are scheduled to be suspended Aug. 15-16, and emergency shelters are expected to open as conditions deteriorate.
