AssistAlert: Travelers Face New TSA Fees and Carry-On Restrictions in 2026

01/9/2026

Starting February 1st, 2026, U.S. travelers without a REAL ID or other acceptable identification will be required to pay a $45 TSA ConfirmID fee to proceed through airport security. The fee allows travelers to undergo an alternative identity verification process valid for a 10-day travel period, but TSA warns this option may result in longer screening times and added delays. Officials strongly encourage travelers to obtain a REAL ID or carry a valid passport to avoid disruptions.

In addition, airlines are enforcing stricter carry-on and personal item policies in 2026, with size limits now explicitly including wheels, handles, and external pockets. Many basic economy fares now limit travelers to one small personal item only, such as a backpack or handbag that must fit under the seat. Most major U.S. airlines limit carry-ons to 22 x 14 x 9 inches, while weight limits, especially on international routes, are being more closely enforced. Oversized or overweight bags may be gate-checked with fees that can exceed over $65, and some airlines, including Air Canada, are removing free carry-on allowances for basic fares.

Advice

  • Confirm you have a REAL ID or acceptable identification before traveling.
  • Review your airline’s carry-on size and weight limits, including basic fare restrictions.
  • Arrive early and expect longer security screening times if additional verification is required.
  • Consider checking bags in advance to avoid last-minute gate fees and delays.
