AssistAlert: Major Earthquake and Tsunami Risk in Northern Japan

12/8/2025

A magnitude-7.6 offshore earthquake hit northern Japan late December 8th, triggering tsunami advisories and evacuation orders across Aomori, Iwate, and southern Hokkaido. The quake occurred about 550 km north of Tokyo, where tremors were lightly felt but did not cause immediate damage. Authorities warn of waves reaching up to 3 meters, and more than 11,500 residents have already been ordered to evacuate vulnerable coastal areas. Strong tremors were felt widely across Hokkaido and northern Honshu, prompting immediate shutdowns of rail networks and airport operations. Early assessments indicate potential structural damage alongside a strong magnitude-5.5 aftershock shortly after the initial event.

Transport disruptions are ongoing as JR Tohoku Shinkansen services, JR Hokkaido rail lines, and portions of the Hachinohe Expressway are suspended for damage assessments. New Chitose Airport is closed while runways are inspected, and additional delays across northern Japan are expected. Authorities warn that further tsunami activity, power outages, and infrastructure damage may continue through the night as impacts are assessed.

Advice

  • Monitor local news for updates & follow all official directives.
  • Move away from coastal areas until tsunami warnings are lifted.
  • Avoid damaged buildings and check for structural integrity before entering.
  • Plan for transportation delays, as roads and rail lines may be affected.
