AssistAlert: Continued Eruption at Mayon Volcano Raises Travel Concerns

01/8/2026

Mayon Volcano remains active as of January 8th, 2026, following a string of low-level eruptions and increased volcanic activity that resulted in officials raising the alert level to Level 3 on the country’s five-level warning system. The 2,462-metre (8,007-foot) volcano is one of the Philippines’ top tourism draws because of its near-perfect cone shape. But it’s also the most active of the country’s 24 restive volcanoes. The volcano is situated about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Legazpi City, a major population and transportation hub in the Bicol Region, increasing the potential for regional travel disruptions. Volcanic plumes, crater glow, and rockfalls continue to signal unstable conditions near the summit.

Authorities caution that eruptive activity could intensify without warning. Thousands of residents have been evacuated from high-risk zones, and movement restrictions remain in place around the volcano. Road access, tourism operations, and local services may be disrupted as response efforts continue. Travelers are advised to remain flexible and avoid non-essential travel in affected areas.

Advice

  • Use protective masks and eyewear, especially in areas affected by ashfall.
  • Monitor local news & follow all official directives.
  • Prepare a three-day supply of provisions and non-perishables.
  • Pay attention to travel advisories, confirm flights to and from regional airports.
