SITUATION BRIEF

As global travel steadily approaches pre-COVID-19 levels, the travel industry is facing and responding to new challenges directly caused by the Ukrainian and Russian conflict.

Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion, all 27 countries in the European Union (EU) have banned in its entirety Russian planes from their airspace, which suspended flights to and from Russia. In kind, Russia has currently banned air carriers from 36 countries from their airspace, most of which are countries that have imposed stringent sanctions. In the U.S., the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently increased the no-fly zone for U.S. carriers to include Ukraine and Belarus, as well as part of western Russia, which is a major route between Europe, North America, and Asia. Consequentially, flights will have to reroute, increasing extra fuel cost and time to itineraries. To learn more, click here.

ADVICE

  • Shelter in place until the situation becomes clear. Avoid travel to Ukraine until the situation stabilizes; consider exiting the country if safe to do so.
  • Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
  • Reconfirm the status of public transport services and borders before departure.
  • Pack a grab/go-bag. Ensure personnel keep key items (communications, contact numbers, identification, cards & cash, medication, etc.) close to hand and readily available. Make sure cell phones and electronics are fully charged.
  • Check trusted local sources for updated information on potential travel disruptions.
  • Exercise heightened vigilance at public gathering places in major urban areas. Heed authorities' instructions; remain calm and cooperative if questioned by law enforcement officers.
  • Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation.
  • Refrain from discussing the on-going conflict in Ukraine or other politically sensitive topics, including on social media services.
