SITUATION BRIEF

This morning at 4:17am, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake ripped through the Middle East, causing catastrophic damage to Turkey and Syria. The two countries were hit exceptionally hard, suffering tremendous damage to buildings and infrastructure in the wake of the initial earthquake with an unusually powerful 7.5 tremor following. 3,800 people are reported dead at this time. The earthquake was also felt in Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Palestine, and Lebanon. Aftershocks are continuing to rock the area and are anticipated to continue for the next 7-10 days. The United States Geological Survey reports that these series of shocks are the most deadly to hit the area in 20 years.

ADVICE

  • In the event of aftershocks, be prepared to Drop, Cover, and Hold On.
  • If you are in a damaged building, evacuate immediately. Stay clear of any visibly compromised structures.
  • If you become trapped, send a text if possible and make noise to let potential rescuers know your location. Avoid shouting and cover face with shirt for protection against dust or debris. Use a whistle if available.
  • Avoid contact with any potential floodwaters as they may be contaminated with chemicals, sewage, and debris.
  • Pay attention to local news sources for instructions and emergency information. Keep battery operated radio on hand if possible.
