Assist Alert: Volcanic Eruption on the Island of St. Vincent

April 9, 2021

The La Soufrière volcano on the eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent erupted early this morning sending nearly a four-mile high plume of ash into the air. Emergency management officials said the ash column was about 20,000 feet high and that the ash was headed east into the Atlantic Ocean and that more explosions could occur. No injuries or casualties have been reported at this time. Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for 16,000 people who live near the volcano. Officials plan to board them onto cruise ships and take them to nearby islands. St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves announced that people who wish to board a rescue cruise ship or who are granted temporary refuge on any nearby islands will have to be vaccinated.

Those present in the affected area are advised to avoid the vicinity of the volcano, monitor the situation, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities, including evacuation orders.
