SITUATION BRIEF

Cases of COVID-19 have been exponentially rising around the world with outbreaks in over 176 countries and an estimated more than 570,000 cases worldwide. Most countries have started enforcing stronger lock-downs and self-isolation measures to halt the spread of the virus. For a list of countries’ travel restrictions visit our website at www.assistamerica.com/COVID-19-travel-restrictions.aspx.

As of March 26th, the United States of America has officially surpassed China and Italy in confirmed coronavirus cases. To halt the virus' spread, many state and cities across the country are issuing lock-down orders. Early reports show that this tactic is working as aggressive social-distancing measures put in place in New York state seemed to have slowed the virus' spread.

After a week of announcements for strengthened measures by the United Kingdom government, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his top health minister announced that they tested positive for the infection on March 27th. More than 14,700 infections have been recorded throughout the nation, but as the UK has not started testing widely, true infection numbers are likely to be much higher.

Fearing another round of the outbreak in the country as cases spike worldwide, China has temporarily closed off entry to foreign passengers as of March 28th. The decision to effectively seal off the country to foreigners is another protective measure intended to safeguard against infection from international travel, after more than 500 imported cases of the coronavirus were confirmed.

ADVICE

  • All non-essential domestic and international travel should be canceled.
  • Travelers and expats stranded abroad and who wish to return to their home country should contact their country’s embassy or consulate for assistance. Many countries are working with their national airlines or neighboring countries to charter flights to repatriate their citizens.
  • If you are feeling unwell, do not go to the hospital or medical facility unless you are experiencing severe symptoms and need immediate medical attention. Instead, call your healthcare provider who will review your symptom sand recent itineraries and will assess whether you need to be tested for the coronavirus.
