Chinese New Year Travel Predicted to Break Records in 2017

This year’s 40-day official travel season known as “Chunyun” (directly translates to: “Spring Festival Transportation”) is projected to top last year’s travel totals with a projected 2.98 billion trips taking place. 356 million Chinese travelers are expected to take to the railways and 58.3 million to the air this holiday season.

Six million of these trips are predicted to be outbound, according to China’s largest online travel agency, Ctrip. The top destinations this year include Thailand, Japan, the United States, Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam. With the holiday break lasting nearly ten days this year, many long-haul destinations may be popular as well such as trips to Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
Golden Week began on January 23 and peaks on January 25 with many travelers trying to depart prior to the travel madness when the official Chinese New Year begins on January 28.
