Appendicitis in Virginia
I was in Santa Cruz, CA at a family friend’s beach house when I started to have severe abdominal pain and vomiting. My sister who attends the same school as I do reminded me about Scholastic Emergency Services, a program we have through our health insurance for travel emergencies, so I called.
Their medical team asked me about my symptoms and directed me to the nearest ER, where it was confirmed that I had appendicitis. I had an appendectomy done at the hospital. Scholastic Emergency Services monitored my care throughout my recovery. After I was discharged from the hospital, I got some rest at the hotel before my flight home. Scholastic Emergency Services oversaw my trip home and even called to check up on me the next day.
Drowning in Oklahoma
We’re from a small town in Argentina. My son was studying in the U.S. at a university in Oklahoma. It was a Monday when I received a call that Marcos* struck his head during a swimming competition and drowned.
I was in shock from the news and had no idea where to turn or how we would bring his remains home. My husband remembered that through the insurance plan at school, he had a program called Scholastic Emergency Services for any emergencies while traveling. As soon as I called, they immediately helped locate a funeral home that was able to carry out our wishes of cremation. They arranged and paid for everything, including the necessary death certificates to have his remains brought home to us.
My husband and I were so thankful to have this service during such a terrible time. They were a great comfort.
Worrisome Prescription
My son and I were packing for his study abroad semester in Florence, Italy. The day before his departure, I became concerned about him traveling with his prescription for Adderall since it is a controlled substance. I remembered he had Scholastic Emergency Services, an added benefit to his health insurance.
I called them and their medical staff informed me of the regulations for safely traveling abroad with his medication. I was free of concern and brought Dennis to the airport worry-free.
Spring Break Fracture
My friend Rebecca* and I were on our college spring break in Cancun. One day we decided to go out riding on ATV’s and unfortunately got into an accident.
From what I remember, I flew out of the ATV and hit a wall. It was confirmed at the hospital that I had a fractured shoulder and a fractured wrist and both would require surgery
Rebecca was unharmed in the accident and called Scholastic Emergency Services, the added benefit we receive through our school’s health insurance plan. Their staff coordinated with the hospital and obtained my medical records. They oversaw my care during my surgery and my entire hospital stay.
When I was ready to come home, they arranged and paid for me to sit in business class seating on the plane for my comfort. They also provided a ticket for Rebecca to sit alongside of me to assist with any challenges I might have faced during the trip home.
I was very satisfied with the services I received from Scholastic Emergency Services. They were a great comfort while being away from home and injured in an unfamiliar location. |
